Kherson region has always been known for its famous Kherson watermelons.
Every year, Kherson region was a leader in the cultivation of melons, accounting for about 35-40% of the production of all melons in Ukraine. The region’s farmers mainly grew these crops in the left-bank Kherson region, which is still occupied.
However, our farmers continue to sow melons despite all the obstacles.
Last year, only 200 hectares of melons were sown, with a harvest of 3,000 tonnes.
Most of the melons are sown by individual farmers and households on their private plots, although previously 90% of all melon production was grown by households.
This year, 1,000 hectares of melons were planted in the de-occupied territory of Kherson region, of which 850 hectares were for watermelons and 150 hectares for melons.
The largest areas of melons were planted in the Novovorontsov and Milivska communities – 300 hectares each, and smaller areas were planted in the Vysokopilska, Kochubeevska, Velyka Oleksandrivka, Muzykivska and Darievska territorial communities.
Currently, the grain harvest is in full swing and the first melons have already been harvested in the Muzykivska and Kochubeivska communities.
As of July 2024, 160 tonnes of watermelons have already been harvested from an area of 15 hectares.
